(Rock scholarship recipients Emma and Christine are among the top students at Kabale Comprehensive Nursing School in Kabale, Uganda).
Christine Mahoro, a Rock Nursing student in Kabale, Uganda, shared she is now working in the surgery unit.
“It was so tough the first few days to be around people with bad burns, horrible head cuts and injuries. People were in so much pain and I had to ask the Lord to help me cope up. My thoughts were I don’t know if I can do this Lord.”
But after praying she said she now really loves it because she has been able to comfort those in horrible pain and give them hope. She says it is encouraging to be able to help someone and make a difference to them.
One child had severe burns and she had to remove the burned skin from her without any anesthetic and she said “her screams were so bad…it was hard to bare.” But she continued to pray to herself that the Lord would give her strength to treat her.
Another patient after suffering a horrible head wound was counseled by Christine to forgive the person who attacked him. She said, “Jesus was able to forgive the people who crucified him.” Then she shared the Gospel and the man was saved.
As the patients began coping with the pain she has been able to develop relationships with them. Some even write her notes after they leave the hospital. Her compassion, kindness and sensitivity to her patients, is making a difference.
"Not only is her life changed but the lives of others she touches," says Margaret Noblin, a Rock director who encouraged Christine in Kabale in March. "It is such an honor to know her and experience life with her as she grows in her profession and in the Lord’s strength."
Emmanuel (Emma) Babi, another Rock Nursing student has just been named Vice-Chairman of the Prayer Fellowship at the Nursing school and loves to encourage the students.
“For a while we were not having good attendance and the matron changed the leadership team and now we are working as a good team and people are returning to pray and fellowship.” Emma loves to lead praise and worship and has an enthusiastic smile and welcoming spirit.
He is very excited about the weekly Rock fellowship meetings in Kabale that are kicking off this month.
This term Emma has been working in pediatrics and said, “ I love the children so much and I always pray to God that he will give me the ability to help these little ones. He has answered my prayers and given me favor with the children so they are not fearful of me. One child recently was restored from a coma.” Emma hopes in the future he will be able to continue on and become a doctor. “I’m so happy when I see the children healed. “
